The tech world has been buzzing for weeks with news that over half of Windows users are still holding back on upgrading to Windows 11. While that may sound concerning, for UK SMEs this presents a valuable moment of strategic opportunity. Certainly no need to panic.

Microsoft’s support for Windows 10 ending is in October 2025. Now is the perfect time to re-evaluate your IT infrastructure and, at the same time, improve the security of your business data.
We see lots of Hardware resellers describing upgrading devices as a way to ‘futureproof your business’, but of course they’re over-egging it! Let’s be realistic here. Nothing in tech is going to ever truly ‘futureproof your business’. You can safely bet technology is going to keep on evolving, and in 5-10 years time we’ll see another ‘big Windows upgrade’ looming. So now let’s put this current situation in perspective for you.
What’s Really at Stake?
After October 2025, Microsoft will no longer offer free security updates for Windows 10. That means any organisation still relying on older systems could be exposed to cyber threats, compliance issues, and productivity risks. While Microsoft will offer paid security updates through its Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme, these will come at a significant and rising cost — especially for businesses managing multiple devices.
It’s worth noting that what Microsoft is doing is absolutely the norm in software world. Vendors simply can’t keep every version fully supported, and with security flaws patched, forever. On a regular basis Apple & Google retire older versions of their operating systems, and cease to support them. The various flavours of Linux have defined lifecycles too. The big issue is that the vast majority of business laptops and desktops run Windows, so when Microsoft does it everyone notices!
But there’s also a bigger picture here. This isn’t just an operating system upgrade — it’s a strategic opportunity to upgrade how your organisation works.
Why Upgrading Now Makes Strategic Sense
Improve Security Posture: Windows 11 has been designed with stronger built-in security, including hardware-based protections like TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. This makes it harder for ransomware and malware to take hold — an increasingly important advantage as cyberattacks continue to rise.
Increase Productivity: The new OS integrates more seamlessly with cloud tools, AI-powered features, and modern device management. Faster boot times, better multitasking, and smarter virtual desktops can all help your team get more done.
Boost Trust and Compliance: Clients and regulators expect businesses to handle data securely. Demonstrating that you’re using supported, secure systems can improve your reputation and help meet compliance requirements like GDPR and Cyber Essentials.
Avoid Disruption Later: Acting early allows you to plan your device refresh in a phased, cost-effective way — rather than racing to meet a deadline under pressure (and potentially facing supply chain pressure). In the run up to October we will almost certainly see shortages of the most popular PC and laptop devices as many organisations rush to replace their estate at speed.
Common Barriers – and How to Get Past Them
Some SMEs are holding back on upgrading to Windows 11, because their current devices still seem to work fine. Unfortunately many aren’t compatible with Windows 11, even if performance feels acceptable. Microsoft’s own compatibility checker can help you assess where you stand.
Others worry about cost. Holding back on upgrading to Windows 11 may seem like a saving, but replacing ageing machines before they become liabilities is often cheaper than funding emergency upgrades or extended support. Plus, new devices typically come with lower energy consumption and higher reliability — meaning you could actually save a bit on running costs!
What Should You Do Now?
- Run a compatibility check across your devices (or we can do this for you!)
- Work with your IT provider (if we don’t already then we’d love to work with you!) to develop a phased upgrade plan
- Explore leasing or finance options to spread the cost (we can put you in touch with leasing providers our existing customers have used successfully or you may have your own leasing provider)
- Train your staff early on the new platform (TBH it’s not that big a leap, but we can tweak the desktop to look more ‘Win10-ish’ if it would help 🙂 )
- Treat this as a strategic investment, not just a compliance task
In short: this isn’t about chasing the latest tech trend — it’s about staying secure, competitive, and efficient. The businesses that act now won’t just avoid disruption in 2025 — they’ll gain a head start on their peers.

ESU is available now for Windows 10 Pro via volume licensing. If you do genuinely need to continue running any Windows 10 devices after mid-October, give us a call now, so we can get them enrolled for you in ESU.
Note: The price of the ESU program (£48 per device, plus VAT, in Year One) will double every consecutive year, for a maximum of three years. ESUs are cumulative. If you decide to jump into the program in Year Two, you’ll have to pay for Year One too. This is not a low cost or a permanent option! ESU is intended only for specialist desktops or laptops (such as those controlling medical or lab equipment, CNC systems etc) which cannot be upgraded or replaced immediately.
Further Note: For completeness and transparency, there is a Consumer ESU program available at $30 USD (or local currency equivalent plus taxes) per device. This is not for use on business devices. It requires a Microsoft account and is limited to 10 devices. There’s more information on the Consumer ESU program here
